Fire Safety in the Supply Chain (Part 1.)
Don’t Wait for Disaster to Strike!
One of the most frequently ignored yet critical points in logistics safety is the combustibility of pallets. Whether in massive warehouse centers or on the decks of container ships, the risk of fire is constantly present.
The Problem: The Traditional Pallet as Potential Fuel Many view the pallet merely as a necessary auxiliary tool, yet in the event of a fire, the large quantity of wood or untreated paper-based pallets represents a significant fire load. In warehouse fire protection, passive protection – that which prevents a small spark from becoming an uncontrollable sea of flames – often takes a backseat to sprinklers and alarm systems.
The Solution: Flame Retardancy at the Source The foundation of our development is a special coating that radically changes the behavior of paper-based pallets in case of fire:
- Effective Even Without Active Protection: It’s not about our product being “fireproof” (since everything burns in an industrial conflagration), but rather that the material does not feed the combustion.
- Flame Retardancy: Thanks to the coating, the pallet is extremely difficult to ignite, and more importantly: it does not transmit the flames. This advantage, measurable in seconds, can be life-saving in localizing the fire.
- Insurance Perspective: Risk reduction is a valuable aspect for insurers as well. Although this does not immediately guarantee lower premiums, the application of proactive fire protection solutions is increasingly becoming a basic requirement in modern, high-value warehouses.
What Provides the Protection? The basis of the solution is a special, polyurethane-based elastomer coating that radically increases the fire resistance of the pallet:
- Oxygen Starvation: The coating seals the paper fibers from oxygen, so the pallet does not feed the combustion.
- Flame Spread Inhibition: It prevents the pallets from functioning as “fire channels,” thus the chain reaction can be stopped at the source.
- Durable Protection: The flexible surface does not crack even under extreme stress, so the fire protection capability is guaranteed throughout the entire shipping cycle.
With this solution, the pallet is no longer a risk factor, but the first line of passive fire protection, limiting the spread of fire.
